Illinois' Opioid Crisis
State of Illinois Opioid Action Plan Panel
Opioids are Illinois’ greatest public health and safety crisis. The number of heroin overdoses doubled between 2013 and 2016. The number of prescription opioid overdose deaths quadrupled in that time period, and the number of synthetic opioid overdose deaths increased ten-fold. Of the drug overdose deaths in 2016, 80% involved opioids.
Behind these staggering statistics are the names, faces, and stories of those battling opioid addiction and their loved ones. Dustin Brown’s story is just one of many. He shared his story of finding God and the road to sobriety in an ice storm with a rapt audience on an October 12th panel hosted by Illinois Lieutenant Governor Evelyn Sanguinetti. The panel was part of a statewide listening tour to solicit feedback on the recently released State of Illinois Opioid Action Plan. Prairie Center CEO Gail Raney was also part of the panel.
